Questions and answers about residency and allocation of residency in the artist residency
What does it take to apply for a stay?
There are no specific requirements for education or previous exhibition activity, but emphasis is placed on both technical level and (in particular) the ability to communicate the art.
It is appropriate to be able to refer to a website or other form of representative online portfolio.
What criteria are used to select the artists?
First and foremost, the quality of the artistic work is considered. In addition, the selection of artists emphasizes a diverse spread throughout the season, both in terms of geography and artistic expression.
Can foreign artists apply for residency?
Certainly, yes: since the first artists moved into the artists’ residence in 2016, many languages and nationalities have been represented, including various overseas ones.
What is the idea behind ART56?
The idea behind the establishment of ART 56 was to present a range of artistic expressions for the enjoyment, experience and inspiration of residents and visitors to Holmsland Klit.
What does a stay entail?
Resident artists commit to keeping the studio open for visitors from Saturday to Wednesday, from 1pm to 5pm (as of 2026). The artist is expected to work during the residency and communicate their practice and forms of expression.
What guidelines apply in the studio?
The studio is intended as a workspace and there are no restrictions in this regard. For example, screws and nails may be screwed and nailed into the walls in connection with hanging. However, it is expected that the workspace is left in roughly the same condition as it was received. . . .
Is it allowed to sell artwork?
Resident artists are welcome to sell both original works and reproductions such as cards or prints to visitors. No commission is charged on works sold.
Who is behind ART56?
Kunstnerboligen was established by Holmsland Klit Tourist Association as part of the transformation of the area with old tool sheds at Æ Tysk’havn, and the development of actual city tourism in Hvide Sande. The idea was the idea of Henning Davidsens, then rental director at Feriepartner Hvide Sande – Søndervig. The starting point, as he says, was a desire to show the world the fantastic light that exists in Hvide Sande, here in the middle of the seaweed between the North Sea and Ringkøbing Fjord.
